Intensive Care Unit
At Foothill Regional Medical Center, the intensive care unit (ICU) aids the recovery of patients with severe, life-threatening injuries and illnesses. Our specially trained team of physicians and registered nurses provide continuous monitoring and treatment for the patients who need it most.
Our ICU offers cardiac, medical, and surgical divisions which provide critically ill patients with the highest level of care available. We provide around-the-clock observation for those whose condition is life-threatening due to:
- Trauma
- Infection
- Surgical complications
- Severe breathing problems
- Cardiac arrest or acute heart disease
Each unit is directed by an attending physician, who supervises all patient care. There is generally one registered nurse available for every one or two patients, depending on what each individual and their condition requires.
All new cardiac monitoring technology allows our physicians and nurses to keep track of patients’ conditions from anywhere in the hospital. In addition, ICU providers have an Arctic Sun Temperature Management System at their disposal. This non-invasive medical device modulates patient temperature with precision by circulating chilled water in pads adhered to the skin. Therapeutic hypothermia, which lowers patients’ body temperatures to lower levels, can reduce the risk of brain injury after cardiac arrest, stroke or trauma.
At Foothill Regional Medical Center, we understand that family members are an important part of the healing process. Visitors are allowed anytime (24/7) at the ICU. The ICU is next-door to the emergency department, so visitors can pick up a visitor wristband from the ED. To access the ICU, please park in the ED parking lot behind the main hospital.
Families should select one person to communicate with caregivers to keep other family members informed of the patient’s condition. Having one spokesperson helps ensure clear communication between the nurse, physician and family, and allows our caregivers to spend more time caring for patients.
The ICU at Foothill Regional Medical Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with trained critical care specialists.
